It's not unusual for a fine to be imposed that's HIGHER than the
statutory limit as part of a plea bargain as a condition of
probation. If Gary Burnore were originally charged with a
misdemeanor, and a fine higher than $1000 were imposed by the judge,
Burnore could have appealed. But if he agreed to a higher fine as
part of a plea bargain to avoid a felony conviction and prison time,
then he's waived his right to appeal.

If the Burnore-supporter who calls himself "victorcracker" is
correct, then the actual fine is more like $11,000, payable at
$300/month over the three year term of Burnore's probation. The
$30,000 is what Burnore claims he spent in legal fees. If he were
only facing a misdemeanor rap all along, then he spent $30,000 to
make a maximum fine of $1,000 grow to $11,000. Not very smart! It
might have been well-spent, however, if it got a felony reduced to a
misdemeanor.

It looks like Gary picked the wrong state in which to molest that
girl. And he certainly was not as dicreet as he should have been,
seeing as how someone found out and anonymously blew the whistle on
him, leading to his arrest. And that's something of which the
pro-privacy, pro-anonymity, remailer user/operator community can
take pride. Despite all of Gary's potshots calling remailer users
"anonymous assholes", "abusers", "harassers", etc. his criminal
conviction for child molestation as a result of an anonymously
e-mailed tip demonstrates the origin of his anti-privacy agenda.

Gary's conviction is proof that REMAILERS DID THEIR JOB, part of
which is the facilitation of anonymous whistleblowers. Criminal
bullies can no longer count on intimidation to silence those who
know of their crimes and wish to see justice done without exposing
themselves and their families to revenge and retaliation.
