BTW I know that M$DOS 6.0 and up, I haven't looked at 5.x and down,
has a random serial number written to the hard disk and all floppies
whenever they are formatted with the format command. I learned this
when a hard disk failed and a new one was formatted and an
application refused to run. I had to get a new authorization code for
it. A little investigation turned up the disk serial number.

It can be changed with a disk sector editing utility such as Norton
Utilities. What, you don't have NU!

This fact seems to have been overlooked by those privacy seekers
screaming about Intel's Pentium III serial number. YOUR DISKS ARE
ALREADY SERIALIZED!

it made it possible to go elsewhere.
