What Price for Privacy

Article in Canadian Business Magazine,

http://www.canadianbusiness.com/02269904.htm

I love the outtakes that are really Hard Copy'sh. Especially the comment
of

"People can do all kinds of things with this," says
Brian Ford, police chief in Ottawa-Carleton.
"Drug deals, bank frauds, telemarketing schemes.
They could plan a murder over the Internet, and
                  do it with impunity"

hmmm.....Telemarketing schemes? Plan a murder? How does this differ from
having a private conversation in a bar, or just having encryption? Murder,
Drug deals? How can these things occur online? It's funny how the
Internet, encryption and now anonymity & privacy on the Internet seem to get
blamed for all these things despite the fact that none of them occur in
Cyberspace alone. Goes to show that even Canadian's have the ability to
raise the specter of the four horseman.

I'm sure this is just a sample of some of the flack we are going to get for
trying to protect the privacy of the 99.9% of people who are going to use
this to be private, not worry about S.L.A.P libel suits (Strategic Lawsuits
Against Public Participation, i.e. Philips vs. John Does), or worry that a
discussion they have today in a mailing list, chat room or newsgroup will
follow them around for the next 50 years.
