[IWAR] NATO bombs China Embassy, various

Now, China should retaliate by bombing the shit out of some
military training camps and a medicine factory in the US!

That seems to be the going standard rate of retaliation for
bombing embassies. ;-)

China strongly condemns NATO strikes on embassy in Belgrade

BEIJING, May 8 (AFP) - China Saturday issued a statement to "strongly
condemn" the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia, the
     official Xinhua news agency said.

At least two people, including a Xinhua journalist, were killed and
another two people were unaccounted for after NATO missiles hit the
     building.

The female journalist, identified as Shao Yunhuan, died on arrival at
the hospital. The other person killed in the strike has yet to be
     identified, Xinhua said.

Another four people were injured when three missiles hit at midnight
Friday destroying the two-storey building, the agency said.

UN Security Council to meet after China embassy bombing

UNITED NATIONS, May 7 (AFP) - The UN Security Council was due to meet
late Friday in emergency session as China strongly condemned NATO's
"barbarian act" of destroying the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.

Ambassador Shen Guofang, the number two at the Chinese mission to the
United Nations, issued a statement condemning the embassy bombing and
demanded an immediate halt to the military campaign against the
     Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who was holding talks in Washington
with US officials on Friday, was "shocked and distressed" to learn of
the bombing, his spokesman Fred Eckhard said here.

The UN chief "reiterates his conviction that an urgent political
solution must be found to the present crisis in the region," Eckhard
     said.

One person was killed, four were injured, and three were missing
after three North Atlantic Treaty Organisation missiles hit the
Chinese embassy, and destroyed the two-storey building, the official
     Xinhua news agency said.

NATO said that the embassy had not been deliberately targeted.

China demanded an emergency session of the UN Security Council, which
was fixed for 11.30 p.m. (0330 GMT Saturday), council diplomats said.

"We strongly condemn NATO's act and express our indignation," said
     Shen.

"NATO's barbarian act is a gross violation of the UN charter,
international law, and norms covering international relations. It is
also a violation of the Geneva Convention," he said.

"We call on NATO to stop immediately its military action so as to
avoid further humanitarian disaster," Shen said.

NATO has five countries in the Security Council -- permanent members
Britain, France and the United States, plus non-permanent members
     Canada and the Netherlands.

China has strongly opposed the NATO campaign as illegal on the ground
that the western alliance failed to obtain specific authorization
from the UN Security Council, the sole body with responsibility for
     maintaining global peace and security.

China had made it clear however that it could veto such a resolution.
Beijing -- which is ticklish about issues that could apply to the
Chinese occupation of Tibet -- insists that the Kosovo problem is an
     internal matter for Belgrade.

However Security Council diplomats said that China's reaction to the
embassy bombing went beyond the Kosovo issue, as the attack could be
seen as directed against Chinese national patriotism.

The bombing happened as hopes had risen since Thursday of a
diplomatic breakthrough in the Kosovo conflict, after Group of Eight
leading industrialized countries including Russia adopted a statement
outlining principles for a political solution.

The G8 notably called for the UN Security Council to adopt a
resolution enshrining the principles which notably provide for the
deployment of "international civil and security presences" to enable
ethnic Albanian refugees to return to Kosovo.

The G8 does not include China, which is a permanent Security Council
member. But the G8 statement announced that the Chinese government
would be informed of the results of Thursday's G8 meeting in Bonn.

Earlier Friday, NATO conceded that a cluster bomb which hit the
southern Serbian city of Nis had probably gone astray and hit
civilian buildings instead of the airport which was the intended
     target.

Four hurt, four missing in Chinese embassy bombing in Belgrade

BEIJING, May 8 (AFP) - Four people were injured and four were missing
after three Nato missiles hit the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Xinhua
     news agency said Saturday.

The missiles hit at midnight Friday and the two-storey building was
     destroyed, the agency added.

Reports from the independent press agency Beta in Belgrade had
initially said two people were missing and two were wounded.

Rescuers were also trying to free three people trapped in the rubble,
     said the Beta report.
