gun advice requested

I am interested in purchasing a rifle in the near
future, most likely of the sporter variety. I havent
bought a gun in many years and am consequently
unfamiliar with desirable characteristics, reputations
of model/manufacturer, reasonable prices, intracies of
current legislation, etc.

It would be much apreciated if anyone would be kind
enough to respond personally with recommended models,
sources of info, or anything else deemed noteworthy.
