I have seen several perl scripts that typically scan a log file looking for a successful authentication to a service (usually POP) and then adds that IP address to the allowed relay hosts db with a timestamp. The entry is removed after a configurable period in which the user should have sent their mail. I do not have any handy references, a search for poprelay.pl may turn up something.
