I am from the build / configure it yourself school.
That way you know what you've got and how to fix it.
RedHat is a good platform. For a firewall (or any
production box) once I get it configured, it rarely,
if ever gets a full upgrade . . . security patches
are about it.
At my prior position, we used bare bones Linux
with the built in wrappers, ipwadm. We added socks
and TIS firewall toolkit proxies to build our own.
The one I'm putting together for a future home DSL
connection will be similar.
