Sanni,
All the patches that I have ever installed are installed the same way. I
am using FW1 3.0b on Sun Solaris and have no experience on other flavors of
unix or NT.
1 - Stop the firewall. cd to the /etc/fw/bin directory and use the command
"./fwstop"
2 - Back up the machine to tape. I also back up the /etc/fw directory and
all it's subdirectories to disk for a fast recovery in case the patch does
more harm than good. To back up the firewall directories I cd to the
/etc/fw directory and then use the command "tar cvf /backup/prepatch.tar".
3 - Let's say that the compressed patch is in the file
/users/fwadmin/patch3083.tgz directory. cd to /users/fwadmin and uncompress
the patch using the command "/etc/fw/gunzip patch3083.tgz". This will
create the file /users/fwadmin/patch3803.tar. Untar this file with the
command "tar xvf patch3803.tar". This will create a few subdirectories and
a file fwpatchinstall. Simply run the fwpatchinstall script with the
command "./fwpatchinstall". You will be asked what your firewall directory
is, I accept the default of /etc/fw.
4 - Now just start the firewall, cd to the /etc/fw/bin directory and use
the command "./fwstart"
5 - To see if the patch is installed use the command "/etc/fw/bin/fw ver",
this will tell you the fe1 version and the patch level.
As you can see at no time did I need to reboot.
Good luck,
Ken G.
