I just had a technical brief from Stonesoft yesterday. Stonebeat v3.0 is
what is available now and does load *sharing*, meaning that you can run
pairs of FW1, but you must use an external routing device to split your
network (manually). In Q3 of '99, they are to deliver FullCluster 1.0,
which is supposed to give true load *balancing*, meaning if you have two
FW1s, then each gets 50% (automagically), without the need for external
routing trickery. The interesting thing about FullCluster is that it
scales. You no longer are restricted to pairs of FW1. If you have 3 FW1s,
then each gets 33% of the traffic, etc. Failures are supposed to cause the
traffic of the dead box to the distributed amongst the live boxes. It'll be
interesting to see how well it works in practice.
