David,
You need to use a crossover cable to directly connect two Ethernet devices.
A normal hub takes care of this, that is why you use straight through cables
to connect to a hub.

Subject: [FW1] Simple Question...
...regarding the physical setup of the firewall. I'd like to put the
firewall between the physical router (connected to ISP) and our local
network. It's my understanding that this is done with a 10BaseT cable from
the external NIC directly to the router. Is there anything special about
this cable? Is it a regular straight through cable, or crossover? Or do
the router and NIC have to be plugged into a segregated hub by themselves?
TIA,
David
