As I recall, it works something like this:

3.0a and earlier allow for 4.0 SP1.
3.0b pre-SP8 only allows for 4.0 SP3.
3.0b SP8 to 4.0SP4 allows for 4.0 SP4.
4.0SP5 and 4.1SP1 allows for 4.0 SP5.
I'm not sure on pre-SP1 4.1 (my guess is either SP4 or SP5).

Note that the following is what Check Point will support. There are some 
people on the list running 4.0SP4 and earlier with 4.0SP5 and it works for 
them, but as always, your mileage may vary.
