[FW1] VPN Scalability

Can anybody help out on how big I can scale a VPN solution using CheckPoint?  I am looking to replace 1,000 leased lines with a VPN.  Also, any recommendations on platform (NT (not), Solaris, AIX, or Nokia) would be greatly appreciated.
