[FW1] Hack Attempts

While this is not a technical question, I would like some insight.

In the past several weeks, our firewall has been detecting some real potent hack
attempts.  While our rule base is sound and none of the attacks have been
successful, we are concerned about the rash of recent attempts.

What are you doing when you detect hack attempts against your firewalls?  Do you
attempt to identify the offending party?  Where do you look to find this info
out?  What do you do if you can identify the party?  Is there any recourse that
we have?  Is there anything legally that we can do?
