Re: [FW1] Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx
follow this procedure
press STOP-A on the box
# boot cdrom -s
# fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
# mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a
# TERM=suncmd; export TERM
# cd /a/var/adm
# touch wtmp
# touch utmp
# touch wtmpx
# touch utmpx
# cd /
# umount -a
# reboot
you somehow blew away your utmp/wtmp files which are used to record user login
info.
Alternatively, you could go into single user mode and mount the respective disk
slice (c0t0d0s3 or /var)
and then cd into /var/adm and touch the files.

Subject: [FW1] Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx
I have a Sun running Solaris 2.6. I installed fw1 3.0b, followed
by Service Pack 8. When I reboot I get:
/sbin/rcS: syntax error at line 142 ')' unexpected
INIT: Cannot create /var/adm/utmp or /var/adm/utmpx
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: failed write of utmpx entry:" "
INIT: Single User Mode
Type Ctrl-d to proceed with normal startup,
(or give root passwrd for system maintenace):
I never changed rcS, and I can't get it to boot past this
point. Has anyone seen this? Any ideas?
Kenny
