Exactly the point. While we, as technical peers of the computing
industry, can recognize and laud those that we know have what it takes
to succeed, those that perform duties as hiring managers and recruiters
seem to be on the average clueless about the skillset of the people that
they consider for positions. Two things matter to them: 1) meeting
their corporate objectives, and 2) making more money (for their
organizations and ultimately themselves). Now this isn't to say that
their aren't such individuals that do know what they need, but in my
experience, it's a sparsely populated bunch.
And unfortunately, you've also described the problem as it exists
today. Those that don't know probably won't know. It's an uphill
battle we'd be fighting. The only group of people that do it very well
are college recruiters, especially those for prestigious universities
like Ivy League schools. They absolutely require the best students and
the criteria for admissions to those school are well defined, unlike our
current situation with IT certifications.
